The ESCWA (Economic and Social Commission of West Asia, a UN body)
headquarters in Beirut consists of 16 floors, with seven floors
below ground. Smart building capabilities and heat mirror glass
laminates, produce office areas of exceptional comfort.
The building envelope is composed of a unitized panel system, which
has a double laminate interior in a double glazed assembly whose
exterior is part glass and part granite. A 20 metre span steel truss
bridge houses the chairman's office. The building has thin 30 cm
concrete slabs with large (12 m) spans. This was achieved by using
a post-tensioned system. The 52,000 square metre project was built
on a fast track basis, and all the works were completed in 13 months.
Such speed required ACC to work on a 24 hour/7 days a week program.
Three shifts of workmen and two shifts of staff and engineers were
required to maintain the pace of the client's tight schedule.
